Having been in the chiropractic profession for over 25 years I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of cases. One case in particular brought one of the things I fear to life. You see when working with each and every patient, I worry about how this person will respond to care and how will they continue to take care of themselves after I am no longer working with them. So when I analyze what a person needs, I am always concerned about their future health. This particular case was not too different than most cases that enter the office. He was a 38 year old male suffering from moderate to severe lower back pain with pain radiating down the back of his right leg (sciatica). After taking his history and performing an exam I felt that x-rays were necessary. I saw some areas in his lower spine that needed a fair amount of attention in an effort to prevent damage in the future. He declined and only wanted a few adjustments to be out of pain. After about two weeks under my care he was pain free and decided he no longer wanted to continue treatment.
About 8 years later this same patient entered my office with severe lower back pain and pain radiating into both legs. During the exam I noticed a couple of red flags so we took another set of films. The films revealed severe damage to his lower back and I instructed him to go to the emergency room immediately. This case happened several years ago but I still think about it often. To have someone go through something that they could have prevented is troubling to say the least. So I urge people to gather as much information as you can about your condition so that you can make an informed decision that will benefit your long term health.
